A school bus collided with a freight train Monday leaving the bus driver and a 17-year-old student dead and as many as 11 others injured, authorities in North Dakota said.
The bus carrying 14 people was struck just east of Larimore before 4 p.m., leaving students suffering broken bones and three in "very serious condition," Highway Patrol Lt. Troy Hischer said.
Both the 62-year-old driver and the 17-year-old student were ejected from the vehicle and killed, Hischer said.
He described the scene as chaotic, with the students onboard ranging in age from 5 to 17.
"It's high stress on many people from the school and on all of the first responders," Hischer told the Associated Press. "We'll work on that as the night goes."
Hischer, in an interview with the Grand Forks Herald, said the driver failed to yield to the oncoming train before the vehicle was struck near the front passenger door.
One mother who lives near the location of the crash said the school bus had just dropped off her little girl when first-responders swarmed the scene.
"For all our Facebook friends. Daisy is safe and sound," Karyn Hendrickson posted on her Facebook page later that evening.
"She had just got dropped off before the school bus was hit. Her guardian Angels were with her. We ask that everyone say prayers for all the families involved and keep praying for healing."
Grand Forks County Sheriff Bob Rost tells KFGO radio that the bus is from the Larimore School District.
