Two sisters in northern Florida, aged 11 and 15, are behind bars and charged with murder for allegedly killing their older brother. Their parents, who left them home alone with their 3-year-old sister, have been arrested and face child neglect charges.
The older girl said her 16-year-old brother had beaten her. When he fell asleep, police say she went into her parents' bedroom, got a gun, and shot to death her brother. The 11-year-old helped her sister,ActionNewsJax reported.
Columbia County Sheriff's deputies found the boy's body on the living room floor Monday night.
The Daily News is not identifying the sisters or the victim because they are juveniles.
Prosecutors have not yet decided whether to charge the girls as adults.
They had walked 4 miles after the shooting. The youngest called a friend's mother and said she had run away from home and was at a Dollar Store in the small town of White Springs. When the mother arrived, she called the police. The 15-year-old wouldn't make eye contact and kept applying makeup as she hinted something might be wrong with her brother, USA Today reported.
The teen eventually began weeping and said her brother was dead.
Her parents, Keith Kornegay, 37, and Misty Kornegay, 33, were out of town. The father is a truck driver and the mother had accompanied him on a route, police said. They were arrested and charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm.
