An unhinged wacko who attacked an off-duty sergeant as she made her way to work in Harlem Wednesday morning has been nabbed by police, authorities said.
The 43-year-old officer had just gotten out of the 125th St. station at Lenox Ave. at 6:45 a.m. and bought a tea at a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts when the suspect jumped her, police sources said.
He punched the cop repeatedly in the head, leaving her with a cut above her eye that needed stitches and bruises to her face, before running off, cops said.
The officer, a 19-year veteran of the NYPD who works for the NYPD’s Housing Bureau, was taken to a local hospital where she was treated.
Her 6-foot attacker, who was in his early to mid-30s and was wearing a blue hat, jacket and jeans, was apprehended a short distance away and taken to Harlem Hospital for evaluation. His name was not immediately revealed.
Police believe the man is mentally disturbed.
“He was repeatedly yelling random words at himself before he attacked the officer without any provocation,” a police source said.
The officer was not in uniform, so there would have been no way the suspect would have known she was a cop, officials said.
