The Tarpon Springs Police Department has identified the police officer who was fatally shot in Florida early Sunday.
The police officer was 45-year-old Charles Kondek. He was a 17-year veteran of the local police department and a father of five. Kondek was also a former NYPD officer, police said.
The shooting happened at 3 a.m. in Tarpon Springs—approximately 28 miles outside Tampa—after Kondek responded to a call.
Investigators are currently looking into a second crime scene where the shooter fled on a white Hyundai sedan and crashed into a power pole, snapping it in half.
The suspect then crashed into a pickup truck. That's where he has brought into custody, Bay News 9 reported.
Kondek was transported to Florida Hospital North Pinellas to receive medical treatment where he later died.
A press conference was scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
The incident occured one day after two cops were killed in New York City. NYPD Officers Rafael Ramos, 40, and Wenjian Liu, 32 were killed in Brooklyn on Saturday.
