City Education Department officials rejected applications for public space from a dozen charter schools and gave space to a dozen more, agency officials said Friday.
Of those schools that will get city space starting in the 2014-15 school year and beyond, 10 will be operated by Success Academy, the city’s largest charter school operator. The other two charters that got city space will be operated by the Icahn Charter Schools network.
City Education Department officials said they based their decisions on a variety of factors including any impact the new charter schools could have on students with special needs.
The schools that did not receive public space include Voice Charter School in the Bronx and three planned schools operated by the Achievement First charter network.
State law requires the city to provide public space to new and expanding charter schools or else provide rental assistance of up to about $2,800 per child per year.
