Former Florida Gators football player Chris "Juice" Johnson died Friday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 22.
The Ocala, Fla. native was found in a car in western Pennsylvania, where Johnson — who transfered from Florida after the 2012 season — attended and played for Duquesne University, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The medical examiner ruled the death a suicide.
"Everyone associated with the Duquesne football program is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Chris," Duquesne head coach Jerry Schmitt said in a statement. "Chris was a passionate football player who was also a great teammate, who was loved by many. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Chris’ family at this difficult time.”
Johnson excelled during special teams plays during two seasons with the Gators, but he was ejected from the 2013 Sugar Bowl against Louisville after throwing a punch. It was the final game he played at Florida.
After transferring to Duquesne, the defensive back had 104 tackles over two seasons, as well as two interceptions and two forced fumbles.
