A 19-year-old Washington state teen wants to adopt his younger brother so the two cannot be separated following the sudden death of their dad on Christmas Eve.
Brad Rice and 16-year-old Jordan Rice were left orphans after their father, Corey, went to sleep that afternoon and never woke up.
Jordan thought his dad was wrapping presents. When he entered his father’s bedroom, “he was just asleep, dead, on the bed,” KSLA-TV reported.
Their mother died in 2008 from cancer.
“I had to grow up faster than most of my friends, I felt like, after mom passed,” said Brad. “But now I have to keep an eye out for my brother and play the part that my dad did.”
A family friend has established a gofundme account for contributions to help pay for the father’s funeral and to pay legal fees for the adoption process.
In five days, it has raised more than $44,000.
The brothers will also use some of the funds for college tuititons.
“I was just so excited for him to open up what I got him for Christmas,” Brad said.
